A true once in a life time find, an original Poultney & Trimble Smith Carbine, made by the American machine works company of Springfield, Massachusetts. ! This carbine has a super low serial number of 740, putting it’s production date to sometime between the months of September and October of 1863. American Machine works actually started production on these carbines in August of 1863, making this one, one of the first to be produced by this company! It has retained most if not all of it’s original metal and wood finishes. Clear and legible maker stampings, inspector stampings and a beautiful JH cartouche stamping on the left hand side of the stock. When you look closer at the nipple, or cone, and the breach of this gun, you can easily tell it has never been fired! Photos do not do this carbine justice it is absolutely beautiful. This piece is truly a Diamond in the rough!
