Model 1854 12mm Lefaucheux Pinfire revolver. The Model 1854 12mm pinfire was a revolver designed and perfected by Casimir Lefaucheux and his son Eugene, in Paris, France. Undoubtedly the most modern and technologically advanced weapon of its time, the Lefaucheux revolvers fired a revolutionary style of ammunition known as a pinfire cartridge of various calibers, primarily, 7mm, 9mm, 12mm, and 15mm, and even more. This style of cartridge, developed by casimir himself, was a self contained cartridge, metallic brass casing with a stem sticking up which was its primer. During the civil war, thousands of Lefaucheux’s revolvers were purchased  by  both the US and CS armies, with even larger quantities of ammunition being purchased. This particular M-1854 has Lefaucheux proof mark located in front of its serial number of 84009 on the right hand side of the frame. Barley still visible is “E.Lefaucheux, Paris, France” in a single line on top of the barrel. The entire piece is beautifully engraved with scroll work all over, and with it being a large 12mm caliber, was most likely a private purchased side arm for US or CS officer. The gun has a strong tight working action and is fully functionable. The only blemish on this piece is the cylinder loading gate spring is weak and may need to be replaced. All serial numbers match (89) on the cylinder loading gate, cylinder itself, and the frame underneath the wooden grips. An absolutely beautiful piece of civil war history that was way ahead of its time and a hallmark of firearms history that will be a true gem in any collection.
