For sale is a wonderful example of an original confederate soldiers “Wood Drum” canteen or also known as a “Gardener” style canteen. This piece has several unique and rare to find characteristics. It has the soldiers initials “CW” carved into one side, a fragment of the original leather sling, it still retains it’s original mouth piece which is rare to find in these canteens due to it being made of wood and when the canteen is empty the wood shrinks overtime and the mouth pieces typically fall out. These canteens were made out of both cedar and cherry wood, the later being the more rare of the two. This canteen is made from cherry! It’s 7-1/2” in dia 2-1/4” thick, metal bands holding the staves together, with all 3 tin strap loops still in place. These canteens range from $2,500-$4,500 and make wonderful display pieces and would look wonderful in any collection.
