For sale is an original confederate Screw top style tin drum canteen. There were very few screw top style canteens from the war, two of which were manufactured in Richmond, VA. This canteen however, was discovered at an all-girls College in Marion, Alabama. The canteen came out of their collection when the school closed, which consisted of items carried by a confederate soldier and items belonging to Capt. John Moore of the 4th Alabama State Troops, who then later served in the 40th Alabama Volunteers. We believe this canteen belonged to Capt. Moore due to when Moores widow passed away, their son who was living in Tennessee at the time, donated their home that stood on the college campus, and all of its possessions to the college itself. This canteen was one of those items found in the home.
The canteen has its original cotton webbing strap and wool covering which you can still see the hand stitches used to close the cover and you can still see some of the covers original color before it faded. The oxidation of the wools color shows that it was a domestic produced wool cloth that was dyed using logwood dye coloring. The canteen is in fine condition and as mentioned before, it still retains its original wool covering, cotton webbing strap, its screw top and all three sling loops. It’s a beautiful piece and extremely rare! A wonderful opportunity to add a confederate canteen to your collection!
