A Relic of Sherman’s Bummers! This is a beautiful excavated Pattern 1839 Oval US “Arrow Back” Belt Buckle/ plate. These plates would’ve been issued to the enlisted men in the Union Army during the American Civil War! It has become the most iconic and most recognizable buckle from that time period with its distinctive bold letters of “U.S.” stamped into the brass face. This plate still retains 100% of its original lead filled backing and all three of its attachment hooks. The only damage it retains is a small dent in the face on top of the “U”, most likely from the shovel used to dig it out of the ground! This buckle was recovered from a Union Army camp in Wake County, NC, which was occupied by Sherman’s army in the spring of 1865 at the end of his infamous march through the Carolinas! Here’s a wonderful opportunity to own the most iconic belt buckle of the American Civil War that was worn by a soldier in the most infamous army in that war!!
